The summer before my daughter was born I went fishing with my friend Gary Castle in a 16-foot aluminum skiff in the ocean near Juneau Alaska, where we lived.
Juneau must be the most beautiful American city of all; perched against the base of gray granite mountains, surrounded by white & blue glaciers, green spruce forests, and protected from the open Pacific ocean by a hundred miles of barrier islands.
It was one of those rare, clear blue days, with a Carolina-blue sky that reflected off the ocean as a deep, royal blue. The spruce-covered mountains contrasted against the sky and water with a rich, dark green. A few puffs of clouds added bright white to balance the colors into a taste of heaven. The salty breeze was warm enough to shed our sweaters.
We were trolling slowly for King Salmon, using 6″ herring as bait. It wasn’t long before BAM!! — my rod bent half over and fishing line started singing out of my reel!
I grabbed my rod out of its holder and discovered something I’d never experienced before; the feeling of a strong, wild king salmon that didn’t want to be caught. The fight lasted more than 20 minutes, during which neither of us knew what the outcome would be. Would the line snap? Would my knots hold? Or would he live to fulfill his mission of spawning upstream?
Finally, my friend used the net to scoop the king out of the water and into the boat. What a beautiful, 25-pound silver fish! So sleek and strong. He was the only king salmon I ever caught, but to this day I count this as one of the most exciting and enjoyable contests I’ve ever experienced.
Today I was thinking about how readers would react to my book Overcomers’ Treasure Map when they read it. My mind immediately went to the time I caught my king salmon. I believe readers will have a similar experience. The ideas in the book will powerfully challenge them, just as that fish challenged me. And, when they’ve wrestled with the new concepts, and digested them, I trust they’ll have the same feeling of satisfaction as I had when we netted him into the boat.
